Often I hear people say, "I don't do self-promotion," or "I don't want to appear arrogant." And my personal favourite: "That shouldn't be necessary."
By these thoughts, you put the responsibility for realising your ambitions outside yourself. The idea that you shouldn't promote yourself, and that others should just see what you do, is an eternal shame. It is not about self-glorification; it is about sharing with others what you have achieved, what steps you have taken and what you have learnt.
It is wrong to think that your supervisor, team leader or manager is always focused on you as if the universe revolves around you. Spoiler alert: that is rarely the case.
Therefore, the responsibility to present yourself lies with you. And that can be done in lots of different ways. But I want to share one with you in advance. How do you see yourself?
Two stonemasons were asked what they were doing. One replied, "I am carving stones." The other says: "I am building a cathedral."
The better you understand how your work contributes to the bigger picture, the more motivated you will be. Find out even more in my tips!
